The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (of which the Phonos Foundation and Freesound are part of) has published a comprehensive article titled 20 years of sound sharing at Freesound, the prominent international project founded at the UPF. The article traces the 20-year journey of Freesound, explaining how the project emerged to give researchers and creators free access to sound recordings, then evolved from a simple database into a sophisticated platform with tools, APIs, datasets, and technologies for sound analysis. The article also highlights Freesound’s impact on creativity, as well as its role in community-based research, sound culture initiatives, and citizen participation projects. Finally, it examines how Freesound has become a valuable resource for artificial intelligence research, while discussing current efforts to ensure that AI serves the interests of the community.

Acredito que a valorização dos sons compartilhados por comunidades criativas é uma das maiores forças da internet. Projetos como o Freesound mostram como gravações, experiências e ideias podem unir pessoas de diferentes países, permitindo que músicos, produtores e criadores encontrem novas formas de expressão através do áudio. A possibilidade de explorar diferentes paisagens sonoras, efeitos e ambientes torna o processo criativo muito mais rico e inspirador. É interessante perceber como pequenos detalhes sonoros podem transformar completamente uma produção e criar atmosferas únicas. Para quem gosta de descobrir novas referências e combinações criativas, iniciativas assim são realmente importantes. Freesound has been a staple in my life for years as a creator and user of original sound effects. To learn Freesound is over 20 years old is thrilling, even satisfying.

I found it interesting to learn how Freesound has developed over two decades into a global community for discovering and sharing audio. Sound can be used in so many different ways, from creative projects and music to research and education, so having an open platform like this is quite valuable.
